Complicated Merging

All four images are made in one Photoshop (psd) document. The file includes
four wave layers and one underwater layer shot. Each wave layer has its own mask. The top layer, which is the one that I think works best, has a very detailed mask. I selected the highlights and masked those out. Masking can make or break the success of an image.

First wave image with mask. I needed to extend the canvas on this image because I wasn’t seeing enough sky.

This image lacks a believable transition between underwater and wave.

This was beginning to come together. I added the mask that I made for this file to a different wave layer and got the final image.

This image alludes to a transition between the underworld and the waves and even into the distant sky. It is more believable than any of the other versions. Sometimes creating several versions guides you to a final choice.
