Barbuda
Flying in from Antigua, my travel partner and I entered Barbuda from the clouds. We landed and were escorted into the island’s airport house (second row left), which was about 30 square feet in size, with arrivals on one side and departures on the other. The airport was indicative of the island’s slow pace and simple lifestyle.
Barbuda was the most restful place I have ever stayed. Miles upon miles of pristine white beaches stretched as far as the eye could see. Brief thunderstorms ran across the horizon and came over the island, dumped their water, and scurried back out to sea to gather more. It was a paradise of great proportion. Our every need was cared for by the personal assistants at our resort, The Beach House.
Private horseback riding on the beach gave us a rare glimpse of how the island’s horseback racing was done by bareback riders. Fishing for and catching a barracuda was an exciting part of our adventure on the island. This private fishing excursion took us to a small part of the island where endangered Frigate birds came to breed.
I used my underwater camera to photograph the waves as they crashed in on the white sandy beaches and the crystal-clear, blue-green waters teeming with fish. We had a lunch consisting of lobster, shrimp, and fresh vegetables, all prepared by our personal chef and cooked by our private assistant on the beach. I snorkeled that day, enjoying the feeling and sound of the raindrops on the water as one of those thunderstorms emptied its water overhead.
At the end of the day, we relaxed and enjoyed the amazing sunsets from our porch.
